The Scope Firewall: Saying No on Trading-App Builds
Not financial advice. Verify claims independently.
"Can we add crypto too?" is how trading apps die. The scope-firewall rule we run on every build.
The most dangerous sentence in a trading-app build: "while we're in there, can we also..."
Why it's lethal in fintech:
- Every feature touches the ledger (accounting for a new asset class isn't a UI change)
- Every feature touches compliance (options ≠ stocks ≠ crypto regulatory surface)
- Every feature touches the data contract (adding a field mid-sprint invalidates testing)
The rule: the sprint scope is a contract. New ideas go in the next-sprint queue — evaluated, priced, and scheduled on their own merits. If it can't wait two weeks, it isn't a feature, it's a panic.
Stock Picks shipped because we said no to "while we're in there" eleven times during the build. The backlog absorbed them all later — evaluated, not improvised.
